Power Source
Wood pellets are used as the fuel source in the Ooni Fyra 12. Cooking pizza with wood enables your pizzas to get a special sort of taste. Special wood pellets are sold separately by Ooni.
Normal Wood vs. Special Pellets
You can use simple wood as well, but I would suggest you use the recommended hardwood pellets.
These pellets are specially designed to produce the least amount of smoke and smell. The smoke produced is nominal and doesn’t have a pungent smell.
On top of that, the pellets are small in size. Therefore, they have a large surface area. Because of this (and some other technical reasons), the heat distribution is quite good. The heat produced is uniform, so you don’t have to worry about some of your pizza being uncooked.
Efficiency of the Pellets
A single (3 kg) bag of hardwood pellets can last for 3-4 hours. One bag can be bought for $24.99 from Ooni’s site. Using traditional wood instead of this might affect the efficiency (and not in a positive way).
Pizza Flavour
This special flavour can only be produced from a wood fire. Gas or electric ovens cannot produce such a taste. If you want the typical, boring fast food taste pizza, this isn’t something you want to buy.
However, if you want that special BBQ/wooden-cooked flavour, this would be great for you. Personally, I don’t prefer the usual, boring taste. That’s why I always prefer wooden-powered ovens over gas-powered or electric ovens.
Do keep in mind that the type of wood you use will affect your pizza’s flavour. If you use Ooni’s pellets, you won’t face any problems with the flavour. However, using random wood cut from a tree or from the ground might ruin your experience.
Efficiency
Just like the Ooni Koda 12, the Ooni Fyra 12 takes around 15 minutes to pre-heat to around 450 degrees Celsius. The oven gets hot enough in just 15 minutes to be able to cook a stoned pizza in around a minute.
Like I mentioned before in a previous article of mine, it’s better to turn down the heat by a little amount and spend some more time to get the best pizza.
Consistency of the Heat
This is something that I don’t like about this oven. For the heat to be consistent, you have to make sure that the oven doesn’t run out of hardwood pellets. If they do, you will have to refill. In the meanwhile, the temperature will drop a bit.
Keeping the supply from running out (especially during the pre-heat phase) is essential for consistent heat. When cooking the pizza, this isn’t a big issue as it only takes around a minute (or two, at max) to cook it.
Assembling Ooni Fyra 12
Assembling Ooni fyra 12 is pretty much easy. Thanks to the Ooni that sends detailed instructional manual for the buyers of Ooni fyra 12. Ooni makes easier to elaborate each step with the help of pictures to show exactly how to assemble things together. Assembly hardly takes 15-20 minutes and you are good to go.
Instead of reading the manual, why not you watch the video below to get it done even in less time. Here I am for your help. Assemble it without wasting any time. Happy cooking!
Durability
Ooni is a brand that focuses on providing features and values at an affordable cost. At the same time, it doesn’t compromise on quality. Like other Ooni products, the Ooni Fyra 12 is built to last.
If taken care of (and protected from the rain), it can last for years. I would suggest you buy the Ooni Fyra 12 Pizza Oven Carry Cover.
Compared to the Ooni Koda 12, this one is less durable than the other one is. This is thanks to the chimney of this oven.
Portability
Like its predecessor, the Ooni 3, this oven also comes with three foldable legs that can be folded back for transporting it easily. The oven itself isn’t very large. Weighing 10 kg, it isn’t heavy either.
Because of it being lightweight and having small dimensions, it can easily fit in your car. You can take it anywhere you want easily.
One of the most attractive thing when it comes to portability of this oven is that its chimney can be detached from the oven making it the most portable option to consider.

Assemble the oven together and watch the video below to know how to cook with it. Meanwhile, let me rotate my pizza that is cooking in Ooni fyra 12.
Pricing
The Ooni Fyra 12 costs $349 – which makes it $50 cheaper than the Ooni Koda 12. The complete package (the oven, pizza peel and a cover) will cost you $459 if bought together. If bought separately, the products will cost $478.98
The Hidden Cost
If you’re not going to use this for commercial purposes, this won’t be an issue. However, if you’re planning to use it for your business, you’re going to have to include the cost of the pellets.
The straight-up cost of the oven is $349. However, you need to add in the cost of the hardwood pellets. Even though they’re not expensive, you still need to add them.
1 kg of pellets is enough to last about 3-4 hours. A 3 kg bag can last for 8-12 hours. A 3 kg bag costs $24.99. That means you can get 8-12 hours worth of fuel for $24.99
Price to Performance Ratio
The price to performance ratio is a pretty solid one. Before I give you a specific number to get an idea of the ratio, I need you to know that I took into account another factor that I didn’t mention.
Yes, it is an outdoor pizza oven, but it can be used for more than just cooking pizzas. Vegetables and steak can also be cooked in this. So, that adds to the functionality of the oven.
Taking that, as well as the price of the pellets into account, I would say the price to performance ratio on this is 9/10.
If you use plain wood instead of the fancy wood, it would be a solid 10/10. However, you would be sacrificing the real taste by doing so.
A Red Flag
As I covered already, the chimney is made of metal. Metal is a good thermal conductor. Because of this, the chimney can get hot at times.
If you use the oven for prolonged periods of time, the chimney can get hot to the touch.
Using it a very low ground for prolonged periods of time might not be a good option. The chimney’s length is such so that it would be out of reach of children. But still, better safe than sorry.
Worth It?
If you’re looking for a short answer, yes. Now, back to the detailed answer.
If you’re planning to use it for yourself or on picnics, the Ooni Fyra 12 is worth it – regardless of whether or not you’ll be using the hardwood pellets.
However, the answer changes if you’re buying it for commercial purposes. If your plan is to use the wood pellets as the fuel source, I wouldn’t be so sure about this.
Generally speaking, the Ooni Fyra 12 is great for cooking up to 12” stoned pizzas, vegetables and steaks.
